Each fort tells its own story, waiting to be explored. This list is thus dedicated to introducing you to the 37 forts in Nashik (that I know of).

1. Harihar Fort

Harihar Fort is a unique fort with famous vertical stairs that make the climb feel like a real adventure. It used to be an important spot for trading materials back in the day. The trek to the top takes about two hours, and it’s definitely worth the effort.

Once you reach the top, there isn’t much left to explore apart from a few rock-cut water tanks and an old storage house. I personally think it’s the journey, not the destination, that makes this fort special!


2. Ramshej Fort

Ramshej Fort, one of the notable forts in Nashik, is believed to be named after Ramji, who is said to have stayed here before heading to Panchavati. The trek to this fort takes about 45 minutes, making it a short and easy hike for most.

Though small and not well-preserved, Ramshej Fort in Nashik is perfect for those who enjoy hiking and want to experience a bit of history along the way. It may not have much left, but the peaceful hike is definitely worth it.


3. Trimbakgad / Bramhagiri Fort

7. Alang Fort

Inside the fort, you’ll find two caves that can accommodate up to 40 people, along with a small temple and 11 water cisterns. Remnants of historic buildings are scattered throughout the area, making it a fascinating spot for history buffs. This fort offers a unique adventure for those willing to take on the trek!


8. Ankai Fort

Ankai Fort is a historic site that dates back around 1,000 years and was built by the Yadavas of Devgiri. The fort has a fascinating history, having been captured by the Mughals in 1635 and later coming under the control of the Maratha Empire in 1752 after the Treaty of Bhalki. It was eventually taken by the British in 1818.

At the foothills of Ankai Fort, you’ll find Jain caves that span two levels. The lower level has two caves without idols, while the upper level features five caves adorned with well-preserved Mahavir idols, which are locked at night to prevent vandalism. Intricate carvings of Yaksha, Indrani, lotus, and Lord Mahavir can be seen in the main cave.

This fort in Nashik is a must-visit for those interested in history and architecture. I highly recommend visiting the highlights of this fort, including the main gates, the caves, and Kashi Pond.


9. Hatgad Fort

Despite some ruins, the ammunition store building is well-preserved, making Hatgad Fort a great spot for history and nature lovers.

21. Achala / Avihant / Mohandar Fort

Achala, Avihant, and Mohandar Fort are a trio of forts located close to each other in Nashik. These forts have a rich history, initially coming under the control of Adilshah in 1636. The Mughal Emperor Shahjahan tasked General Shaista Khan with capturing the forts in the Nashik region, and Alivardi Khan succeeded in winning them.

In 1670, the Maratha King Shivaji reclaimed the fort from the Mughals. However, it later fell back into Mughal hands during a fierce battle led by Mahabat Khan and Diler Khan. The fort was eventually captured by British Colonel Prother in 1818. Today, these forts offer a glimpse into the region’s turbulent history and are perfect for those looking to explore Nashik’s heritage.


22. Bhaskargad

The fort has changed hands multiple times, initially controlled by the Yadavas, followed by the Bahamani Sultanate and the Mughals. It was captured by Shahaji Raje in 1629 and later by Moropant Pingale for King Shivaji in 1670.


23. Chandwad fort AKA Chandor fort

Chandwad Fort, or Chandor Fort, was built around A.D. 801 to guard the trade route from Khandesh to Nashik. Founded by Dridhaprahara of the Seuna dynasty, it has historical significance, with King Bhoj establishing 52 temples nearby. His daughter, Chandrakala, was married here.

The fort changed hands multiple times, first captured by the Bahmani Sultanate, then the Mughal army in 1635. It fell to the Maratha Empire in 1665 but was recaptured by Aurangzeb. The British took control in 1818, and its importance waned after the G.I.P. Railway opened at Manmad in 1861.


24. Dermal Fort

25. Galna Fort

Galna Fort, located in the Malegaon taluka of Nashik district, was a significant stronghold on the Burhanpur-Surat trade route. The fort is notable for its well-preserved bastions and entrance, making it one of Maharashtra’s better-maintained forts. It’s easily accessible from Malegaon and Dhule via motorable roads, with regular buses available to nearby Dongarale village, just 4 km from the fort.

Historically, Galna was crucial in the late 15th century and changed hands multiple times, from the Marathas to the Nizams of Ahmadnagar. It faced attacks from Aurangzeb in 1704 and was eventually captured in 1705. The fort saw further action in the early 19th century, being occupied by British forces in 1818.


26. Indrai fort

The fort has a sparse historical record, noted for its surrender to Captain Mackintosh in 1818 after the nearby Rajdher Fort was burned. Key attractions include rock-cut steps, a Persian inscription, water cisterns, a Mahadev temple, and ten caves. Exploring the fort takes about an hour.


27. Ravlya & javlya fort

32. Malegaon fort

Today, the fort remains in good condition, featuring 60-foot-tall inner walls and impressive entrance doors. Visitors can see two cannons at the entrance and a hexagonal well inside, making it a fascinating historical site to explore.

After the last Anglo-Maratha war in 1818, Mulher Fort housed four notable cannons. In 2021-2022, two were rediscovered in the forest and successfully transported back to the fort, showcasing the ongoing efforts to preserve its historical significance.
